Adapting to the climate change
State-of-the-art solutions
With our holistic and proactive approach to climate change adaptation, we really benefit from each other's skills across the expertises within EnviDan.
We work to incorporate climate change adaptation into all our sewer projects to ensure that future separation and renovation projects automatically include climate change adaptation where it makes sense.
We always inroll a number of different specialists, and we offer state-of-the-art solutions from radar surveillance, advanced hydraulic models and simulations to buildable blue and green solutions for urban spaces.
Our hydraulic team uses the latest modelling tools that provide the basis for a cloudburst protected and well-documented climate change adaptation.
Our planners and construction engineers are creative and innovative people who think holistically and have respect for the many stakeholders in the climate change adaptation projects.
We also involve our nature and aquatic environmental experts in the recipient assessment, and have specialists in surface water purification. Finally, we apply active process management in the stakeholder and citizen involvement processes to ensure a smooth and successful implementation process.
Cloudburst protection
The need for climate and cloudburst protection of our cities and rural areas is still increasing, and it constantly sets higher demands for handling increasing rainfall, storm water and groundwater levels.
EnviDan has solid experience in the field of climate and cloudburst protection, and it is this experience we bring into play when solving future climate challenges.
EnviDan has developed a combined GIS and spreadsheet tool, which is able to estimate the expected annual costs of flood damage and other fundamental parameters.
The purpose of this new method is to consciously and economically handle the water from a cloudburst in the most effective way.
Rainwater handling
Climate change adaptation is not just expansion of the sewers. Excess rain water should not be hidden away underground. Rainwater is a resource that we actively use to create recreational urban spaces and green oases.
When planning for the future, we must focus on holistic and multifunctional solutions.
We have many solutions for rainwater handling that take the specific area into account. Some of the methods we use are:
- Derivation of storm water through identified pathways in areas where the water makes the least possible damage.
- Rainwater delay with retention of rain water in a basin either on the surface or under ground, after which the water is passed slowly to other SUDS solutions.
- Infiltration of the water into the ground water either through the surface or from a basin into the soil.
- Evaporation in which the water is retained during rain showers, and vaporises when the rain stops.
- Transport of water to another location, to either a closed system where the water does not infiltrate, or an open system where the water infiltrates.
- Purification of the water, removing undesirable contaminants.
- Recycling of rainwater for watering the garden. With more advanced systems rainwater can also replace drinking water for flushing toilets and in the washing machine.
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems
As the rain increases, there is a need to handle all or parts of the rainwater locally.
The pressure on our sewer systems becomes too much and excessive rain is sent unnecessarily to the wastewater treatment plants.
Therefore, SUDS are an integral part of climate adaptation and a natural component of future sewer systems.
There are many opportunities for citizens to implement SUDS on their own proporty, and we have great experience with citizen counselling, where our specialists give advise to the citizens in their own gardens and of specific local issues.
We can advise on soil conditions, water flows on their own land, connection to the common sewer system etc.
We also work to incorporate a number of SUDS solutions into the public drainage system and depending on the best solution in the current situation, we can implement stormwater plants, flumes, waterways, permeable paving, etc.
Rainwater supply is a unique opportunity to design recreational oases in the public areas, and we are not afraid to let the rainwater become a visible part of our cities in a combination of blue and green solutions.
The Waterway
In an interdisciplinary collaboration with the road and asphalt company Colas Danmark A/S and urban space designers from Schulze + Grassov Aps, we have developed a new water handling road system focusing on both everyday and stormwater rain on the city's surfaces, ie. roads and footpaths, parking facilities and courtyards.
The solution is called The WATERWAY, and has a strong focus on visualisation of storm water management as well as aesthetics and urban recreation.

Pilot projects
The first pilot project is located in Låsby in the Municipality of Skanderborg. Here the solution has disclosed a previously piped watercourse
which now runs in an open water channel along the sidewalk. The water's movement and sound gives the residents a new experience of the water and the road.
The runoff water is handled in an aesthetical water flume in the middle of the road in a new v-profile which, if necessary, controls storm water and provides security to the houseowners.
In Middelfart you can follow the path of the water where new water channels and pavings have a brand new and exciting identity.
A change in the cross direction profile in the road ensures that storm water is now kept and managed on the surface, while the water channels located along the northern sidewalk vary in design according to the use of the street. The channels are alternately covered with a lid of perforated cortex steel, open with running water or planted with perennials and tall grasses.
